Review: McDonald's Premium Crispy Chicken Club

I've noticed a lot of McDonald's ads (billboards in particular) tend to tout the quality of their ingredients such as "all white meat premium chicken" and "100% beef." And it makes me think, what did it used to be? Especially the beef... What was it if it wasn't 100% beef? Regardless, I'm not exactly expecting quality at any fast food establishment and when I think of McDonald's besides childhood memories, I think of convenience.

Actually, when I think of my childhood McDonald's memories, I also think of convenience... I used to gaze in awe at the multi-colored rows of pre-made burgers that allowed for the fastest of service times. I also think fondly of 29 cent hamburgers and 39 cent cheeseburgers. I remember when the McChicken was one of McDonald's regular sandwiches and not relegated to a value menu item.

Nowadays, in response to customers wanting more quality, McDonald's has its line of premium chicken sandwiches and I had a coupon, so I tried the Premium Crispy Chicken Club sandwich.
I have to say I was a bit underwhelmed, but partially because I've never taken a liking to having cheese on a chicken sandwich. The Premium Crispy Chicken Club sandwich comes on a soft bakery-style roll with mayo, leafy lettuce, a slice of Swiss cheese, bacon, a crispy chicken breast patty, and a tomato slice.

While the chicken was crispy, it could have used a bit of seasoning... maybe some pepper or something. The lettuce was limp, and the bacon forgettable. I'm making a note to myself to never get this sandwich again.

  1. I certainly agree with you on touting the quality of the ingredients. In fact, when I ordered a McNugget, do you know what it said on the box? It said made with white meat chicken. (so not true...)Isn't it made with chicken pulped up with water and phosphates? Or has it changed...

Q, did you ever try the Angus Burgers? They are pretty good.

    Again, great post and photos!

  2. Actually, they are made with white meat chicken, it's just ground up... It's just white meat chicken pulped up with water and phosphates!

Here's a list of the ingredients in Chicken McNugget sans the batter:

White boneless chicken, water, food starch-modified, salt, chicken flavor (autolyzed yeast extract, salt, wheat starch, natural flavoring (botanical source), safflower oil, dextrose, citric acid, rosemary), sodium phosphates, seasoning (canola oil, mono- and diglycerides, extractives of rosemary).

Mmmmmm... chicken flavor... I love Chicken McNuggets though!

I haven't tried the Angus burgers yet, mostly because they are big and I need to work up to it!

    Thanks for the comments!

  3. I don't agree with McDonald's marketing strategy of trying to seller higher quality products. I mean, when I get a craving for McDonald's it's always for the tried and true: filet o'fish, chicken nuggets, cheeseburgers. Who goes around thinking, "Mmm, I really want a premium crispy chicken sandwich today"? Stick with what you do best, I say!
