As we all know, today is April Fool's Day so it's with a bit of skepticism that a visit to
KFC's homepage revealed a mysterious countdown timer with the words: "Countdown to Double Down."
Clicking on the timer revealed, KFC's
Double Down Sandwich, a grotesque monstrosity of
two original recipe (or grilled) chicken breasts sandwiching two pieces of bacon, two melted slices of Monterey Jack and pepper jack cheese, and (the dubiously named) Colonel's Sauce.
While it sounds super fattening, a look at nutritional information reveals at least calorie-wise that its around Big Mac (540 calories) range at 540 calories for original recipe and 460 calories for grilled. Then again, if you're eating one of these, I doubt you are counting calories. It's priced at a not-so-cheap $6.99 for a combo (I would guess $4.50 to $5 for the sandwich alone if two boneless filets sell for at least $4) and seems more like a gimmick than anything.
So is it really coming on April 12th? They have tested the sandwich in Omaha (Nebraska) and Providence (Rhode Island) so it's possible. But if so, they certainly chose a dubiously day to start the countdown. I guess time will tell. (
Update: It's real alright. KFC is actually going forward nationally with this monstrosity.)
