Review: Pizza Hut - Big Italy Pizza

Pizza Hut Big Italy packaging
Pizza Hut's new Big Italy Pizza is an almost 2 feet long rectangular pizza with rounded edges available with up to 3 toppings for $12. Under Pizza Hut's new simplified pricing structure, you can get it as a specialty pizza for $2 more. (Update 9/8: According to Pizza Hut, the Big Italy features Italian spices baked into their signature Hand-Tossed Style crust. They are promoting the limited-time pizza with a Facebook fan giveaway of 1,000 $15 gift cards. Details here: Facebook.com/PizzaHut)

Usually, I go with pepperoni, sausage, and some vegetable or another, but this time I went with chicken, bacon, and mushrooms. It comes on a cardboard tray covered by a paper bag.

Upon first look, the crust of the Big Italy looks a lot like the dough on Pizza Hut's value-priced Pizza Mia. The crust is fairly flat and takes up a fair amount of real estate, I would guess so they can save on toppings. Basically, the Big Italy is not as doughy nor soft as Pizza Hut's regular hand-tossed pizza.

In fact, the crust of the Big Italy is fairly dry and airy, and almost crunchy, like a stale baguette but warm. Interestingly, there's a discernible almost crispy crust throughout the bottom and edges of the entire pizza. This is true even though the inner slices are fairly soggy since due to all the toppings combined with their thinness.

The crust seemed to be seasoned a little bit on the bottom and the dough a bit of sweetness that I kind of liked. It's not a very saucy or bread-y pizza. There's a decent amount of cheese though.

The most enjoyable part of the Big Italy Pizza was the toppings. Chicken, bacon, and mushrooms go really well together! The Sister especially liked the chicken, which came in fairly large slices and not merely cubed chunks.
