Review: Fatburger - Homemade Onion Rings

California-based fast casual burger chain Fatburger makes one of the best renditions of the mighty onion ring that I have ever had the pleasure of plopping in my mouth. They call them Homemade Onion Rings and they cost a respectable $3.49 for a fresh made order served with a side of Ranch.

Fatburger might be best known for being mentioned in a couple of hit rap songs ("Goin Back to Cali" by the Notorious B.I.G., "It was a Good Day" by Ice Cube, and "The New Style" by the Beastie Boys) or more recently being mentioned on The Tonight Show by franchisee Queen Latifah. But they really should be best known for their Onion Rings. They have almost 100 locations worldwide.
I believe they make them in house because otherwise why call them "homemade?" They only use large onion rings which are battered and breaded and then fried to crispy doneness. The seasoning is pitch perfect not overly salty and just enough to bring out the onion flavor. Most importantly, the onion part is cooked perfectly retaining a distinct onion flavor while breaking tenderly with every bite! No pulling out the onion while leaving the batter.
My only nitpick would be that the Onion Rings are a fair bit greasy from coming fresh from the fryer. Mine's actually pooled a tiny grease puddle in the paper tray. I guess you can pat them with napkins the way some people do with pizza if that's a worry, but if you ever find yourself at Fatburger, you have to try the rings.

  1. A Fatburger opened in Maryland a couple years ago and I I've had their onion rings a few times. I love them. I did a review last year on them and I still go back and look at the pictures from time to time. My favorite fast food onion rings.

  2. I stopped getting them to-go years ago because you are correct, the grease will pool in the bottom of the container and make them resemble those ugly onion loaves from Tony Roma's. However, if you get them at the restaurant, they are much better.
