Review: Sonic - New York Dog

Sonic's new New York Dog is one of four new premium beef hot dogs at Sonic and features an all-beef normal-sized hot dog nestled in a soft bun and topped with sauerkraut, spicy brown mustard, and grilled diced onions.

It's available now for an introductory price of $1.99.

I don't normally eat sauerkraut so the New York Dog is somewhat of a new flavor for me. I've been to Grey's and Papaya King in New York but didn't get the dogs with kraut. I will say that while the hot dog wiener at Sonic is mostly good, I wished that they'd grilled it more for some texture and insofar as a New York hot dog goes it lacks a natural casing and the requisite snap that comes with.
There was a bit too much mustard on my New York Dog but it wasn't particularly strong or spicy. I would have liked some sinus-clearing mustard action. The sauerkraut doesn't have the same vinegary sweetness that a pickle has, it's more of a mild tang. It wasn't as crunchy as I would have liked. The onions added a nice bit of onion flavor and sweetness.

I liked the way the squishy soft bun cradled all the ingredients. Overall, Sonic's New York Dog was interesting but not something I'd get again. I don't think the combination of sauerkraut and mustard does it for me at least not on Sonic's New York Dog.
