Since the
Doritos Locos Taco is
arriving at Taco Bell restaurants nationwide in two days and since I got to try it early at
Taco Bell headquarters, I thought it timely to post a review.
The Doritos Locos Taco is the same
Taco Bell Crunchy Taco that you know and love but with a Doritos Nacho flavor taco shell. Breaking it down, there's seasoned ground beef, lettuce, and shredded cheddar cheese (plus sour cream and diced tomatoes if you opt to go "Supreme." in a Doritos taco shell.
I got my taste for free but the Doritos Locos Taco will cost a suggested price $1.29 (30 cents more than the original version) for the regular or $1.69 for the Supreme version.
When I first heard about the Doritos Locos Taco my first thoughts were "seasoned beef plus Doritos Nacho flavored chip equals too salty" and "I'll get Doritos powder on my fingers!" I needn't have worried though, the Doritos flavor on the shell is noticeable but is not as loud as on a regular Doritos Nacho chip (I think it has less powder) and the whole taco comes in a sleeve that is actually to prevent cross-contamination in the Taco Bell kitchen area (they don't want Doritos Nacho cheese powder on everything) but also keep your fingers relatively powder-free during taco consumption.
I have to say, while I had my doubts, Doritos Nacho cheese flavor goes quite well with the simple flavors of a Taco Bell Taco. The Doritos Locos struck just the right balance between Taco Bell's seasoned beef and the Doritos Nacho cheese taco shell and combined with the rest of the ingredients makes for a enjoyable blend of flavors and texture.
The Doritos shell itself had the same taco shell crunch as the regular shell (but was not quite as crunchy as a Doritos chips). If you look at the close up, you'll see it doesn't have the same bubbly air pockets as a Doritos chips. The reason is it would make the shell too brittle; basically, broken chips are fine, broken taco shells not so much.
