Review: Taco Bell - Cool Ranch Doritos Locos Taco

Taco Bell's Cool Ranch Doritos Locos Taco is not quite yet available, but I got to try one at a recent preview in Los Angeles.

The taco is basically a Taco Bell Crunchy Taco (seasoned beef, shredded lettuce, and shredded cheese) with a specialized shell made of Cool Ranch Doritos tortilla chips.

You can expect them to cost $1.39 each (or $1.69 for the Supreme version) when they arrive on March 7.

The shell is like a Cool Ranch Doritos chips, but without the air pockets (I imagine to reduce shell breakage). As far as the shell itself (sans powder), it's not too different from a regular Taco Bell taco shell, but there are some slight visual differences. I think a side-to-side comparison would probably reveal slight contrasts in crunchiness and texture as well.

The powder seasoning is the same as Doritos Cool Ranch tortilla chips, from the taste to the sticking to your fingers to the red and green flecks; it's all there. The question then is: how does it fit together?

The answer is pretty well. Where the Nacho Cheese version upped the cheese quotient of the taco, the Cool Ranch version adds a bit more contrasting flavors with a tangy creaminess and Ranch spices. The creaminess brings to mind sour cream but is obviously dry, but also more intense. The Cool Ranch seasoning mix pairs very well with Taco Bell's seasoned beef, shredded lettuce, and cheese.

It does get a little bit too salty though and I imagine you'll be wanting more than a just a sip of soda while eating one of these.

Overall, I enjoyed the Taco Bell's Cool Ranch Doritos Locos a fair bit. I've always been a fan of Cool Ranch Doritos and the pairing works well. I would place it a little higher than the Nacho Cheese version, but the regular Crunchy Taco is still my go-to.

Cool Ranch Doritos fans and Doritos Locos Taco fans will find a lot to like when Taco Bell's Cool Ranch Doritos Locos Taco hits the streets early next month.

  1. They need to make this taco with big chunks of chicken!

  2. I'm just counting the days at this point. I don't think I've ever been this excited for a fast food item.

  3. I was probably more excited for the regular doritos taco, but this is up there too.

  4. I'm not the biggest fan of the ranch flavor (I'm probably the only one since most people adore it) so while I am interested to try this because it's new, I feel no need to rush out and buy it as soon as it's released.

  6. Don't care about the Doritos tacos anymore. They are overpriced and just nasty.

  7. I am so excited for this! Cool Ranch has always been my favorite flavor. I never particularly liked the Nacho Cheese flavor, but was surprised by how tasty the original DLT was. I'm hoping this will blow my mind even more.

  10. When I think ranch I think chicken; not taco bell mystery meat.

  11. How does the cool ranch shell have anything to do with taco bell's meat? You're basically saying you hate all items with taco bell's beef, which is fine if that's your opinion, but it's not really relevant to this item.
