Review: McDonald's Minecraft Movie Meal and Nether Flame Sauce

McDonald's Minecraft Movie Meal includes a Big Mac or 10-piece Chicken McNuggets, medium fries, a drink, and a limited-edition Minecraft collectible. The Chicken McNuggets come with new Minecraft-themed Nether Flame Sauce (or other sauce of your choice).

My local McDonald's did a weird thing where it listed the price of the medium-sized version of the meal in the app as $12.89, but then charged 20 cents extra for a medium soda, so the meal came out to $13.09 (but there was a 20% off coupon in the McDonald's app). A regular 10-piece Chicken McNugget combo meal costs $10.59, which means the extra box and collectibles cost $2.50.

The Minecraft Movie Meal came in a special paperboard box that was basically an oversized version of a Happy Meal box. Everything fit in the box quite nicely.

The box, the fry container, and the soda cup all sported a pixelated design reminiscent of Minecraft. The only thing that didn't was the Chicken McNuggets box.

McDonald's Minecraft opened blind box.

The collectible toy came in a sealed blind box (i.e., you don't know which Minecraft toy you're going to get until you break the seal and open the box). I got a Fry Helmet and it was wrapped nicely with some tissue paper. It's made of a soft-touch plastic from what I can tell. The box also included a collectible Fry Helmet foil card and a code to unlock a McDonald's-themed character skin in-game (which I'm guessing is a digital Fry Helmet).

The Nether Flame Sauce is a spicy dipping sauce that features crushed pepper and cayenne with "hints of garlic and sweetness." The Nether is a hell-like area in the video game Minecraft.

The sauce was pretty spicy--it's the spiciest sauce I can remember eating at McDonald's. The heat came on pretty quickly but didn't build much thereafter. Beyond the spicy heat, the Nether Flame Sauce tasted like a standard hot sauce spiked with garlic and just a touch of sweetness. It was just okay for me, but I don't tend to like tangy hot sauce with Chicken McNuggets.

Are the Minecraft collectibles worth the extra $2.50? Sure, if you play Minecraft. I don't play Minecraft, but I'm sure one of my nephews will enjoy the toy and its in-game accompaniments. I did appreciate the consistency of the theme throughout most of the items in the meal. The table I sat at even had a Minecraft-themed placemat stuck on it.
