Review: McDonald's Mocha Frappe

McDonald's is doing a staggered rollout of their newest McCafe offering, the Frappe, an ice-blended coffee beverage, not unlike Starbucks' Frappuccino, that comes in Mocha and Caramel flavors. It wasn't until recently that my local McDonald's starting serving them and I tried one for myself.

McDonald's Mocha Frappe is a concoction made from blending a liquid Mocha Frappe base (mostly water, cream, sugar, milk, coffee, and cocoa) and ice, then topping it with whipped cream and a chocolate drizzle.  The price is $2.79 for a 16-ounce medium and $2.29 for a 12-ounce small.

If you like really thick shakes, McDonald's Mocha Frappe isn't for you. While icy, it's still fairly easy to drink which I don't mind. Upon tasting it I was surprised it didn't use a base of McDonald's soft serve; the taste is mostly vanilla creaminess tempered by cloyingly sweet chocolate and a hint of coffee. I would caution that there is a quite a bit of syrupy sweetness to it that some might not like.  I like it, but I would like it better if it weren't so sweet.

In sum, if you grew up enjoying McDonald's Hot Fudge Sundaes, the taste will be very familiar to you. I have to say I liked it better than the last Starbucks Frappuccino I had and it's a fair bit cheaper too.
