On paper, the Jack in the Box Deli Trio sounds like a pretty good sandwich. If you said you were making such a sandwich at your house, I would be knocking down the door.
Unfortunately, the nutritional facts present a glaring problem that quickly materialized upon taking my first bite of the sandwich: it's too damn salty! I got a fair amount of sliced deli meats but they were by far too salty. Add to that, the pickles and dressing and you won't wonder why your mouth has suddenly morphed into the Sahara, but with less water.
This is not to say the Deli Trio doesn'tt have any redeeming qualities. While the bread could have been crunchier and thicker, it was nice and buttery. I got a good strong taste of the pickles (if you like pickles), but it also added to the depressing saltiness. The sauce had a nice creaminess to it and wasn't just glopped on.
Ultimately, the Deli Trio is an example of the gross misuse of salt. Salt is meant to enhance the existing flavors of individual ingredients but used in excess, it simply overwhelms the flavors leaving you with less than what you started with ingredient-wise. It could be a great sandwich if they just used a lot less salty ingredients.

Appearances alone, it doesn't look too bad. Wasn't the last grilled sandwich you reviewed from Jack in the Box also a mountain of salt?
ReplyDeleteNo, it doesn't look bad at all. This one is actually slightly MORE salty than the Turkey, Bacon, and Cheddar Grilled Sandwich.
ReplyDeleteHow do they even fit 2442mg of sodium into this thing? Does Jack In The Box have an evil sorcerer on its payroll?
