Taco Bell's new Cantina Tacos are Taco Bell's take on the street taco and are available priced at $1.49 for one, $2.79 for two, or $4.99 for three and a large drink. Like the basic street taco, corn tortillas are folded around a simple filling of your choice of meat, onions, and cilantro.
I tried the combo with one of each meat (carnitas, steak, and chicken) and they all kind of taste the same, especially the chicken and the steak. Between the chicken and the steak, the difference was mainly textural, but not by much. Taco Bell's steak is a bit soft and mushy; like it was braised rather than grilled. The carnitas were the most different tasting, and actually had a pork flavor to it. It also had a slight smokiness to it that reminded me a little of hot dog meat. Being Taco Bell, they're not exactly generous with the meat, but there's enough for every bite.
The corn tortillas are soft, moist, and pliable enough, but don't appear to be grilled. They're also a good size for a street taco; just a little smaller than Taco Bell's soft taco flour tortilla.
The Cantina Tacos are a bit on the bland side, so hot sauce and the included lime wedges are almost necessary to enjoy them.
Overall, not horrible, but not great either. If I were going to a fast food restaurant for a street taco, I prefer El Pollo Loco's Taco al Carbon; the chicken has more flavor and El Pollo Loco has a salsa bar (including cilantro, lemon wedges, and diced onions) to better enhance your taco.

The new cantina tacos are ok. The tortilla is kind of mushy and tastes like a raw tortilla. It needs to be grilled or something. I tried the pork and chicken, and both taste good, although I liked the pork better. Of course I am nuts about cilantro, so I generally like anything with a lot of it. I'm not sure if I will buy these again. They are a little pricey for the size, and as my husband put it, we could easily make these at home.
ReplyDeleteHaha, I don't think Taco Bell has a grill. But yeah, you're probably better off making them at home if you have the skills/recipe.
ReplyDeleteThe "look" of street tacos without the flavor or ingredients. Total gimmick, and way overpriced for what you get.
