Review: McDonald's - Holiday Pie

Top-down view of McDonald's Holiday Pie.

McDonald's Holiday Pie is a limited-time holiday item that is carried by some McDonald's restaurants around this time of year at the franchisee's election. McDonald's Holiday Pie comes in the same form at their other baked pies but is filled with custard surrounded by what appears to be a confetti-cake-like sugar cookie crust.

Like their normal pies, a Holiday Pie will only cost you 50 cents (2 for $1; individual pies prices vary from restaurant to restaurant).

So how does it taste? I have to say "custard fail!" The best I can say is that it tasted... interesting. The custard was very eggy--like warmed, raw cake batter. It made me wonder if I would be making an awful tribute to the porcelain god later on (You'll be overjoyed to know that I didn't, but I have somewhat of a cast-iron stomach).

It would have been better with a fruit filling, like the mainstays of cherry or apple or maybe just a better custard. The crust by itself was actually tasty, like eating a lightly-crispy sugar cookie.

I'm sure McDonald's Holiday Pie must have its share of fans, but I don't think most people will like it. Still, at 50 cents a pop, it doesn't hurt (much) to try one yourself.

Just be sure to call ahead to check if your McDonald's actually carries it (my local McDonald's actually sold out over the weekend).
