Trader Joe's Handmade Chocolate Ganache Torte is a decadent feast featuring chocolate mousse sandwiched between two layers of rich, moist chocolate cake and finished with a semi-sweet chocolate ganache. I remember that it used to be around $6 to $7 a while back but these days it costs $7.99 for a pound and a half of cake.
Trader Joe's is a specialty grocery store based in southern California but with locations in about half of the U.S. It sits somewhere between a convenience store like 7-Eleven and gourmet store like Bristol Farms.
I go there ever so often for certain food items such as the Chocolate Ganache Torte but they're not really a one-stop shop for your grocery needs if you like a fair selection or large stock. They usually have more fancier stuff at cheaper prices but you can't always count on them having the same items as they rotate their stock a fair bit.
The Chocolate Ganache Torte might be my favorite item from Trader Joe's. The cake, the mousse, and the icing are all very chocolaty and rich, but not too sweet, veering more towards semi-sweet. If you love dark chocolate, this is the cake for you.
The ganache is almost like a dark chocolate bar. The cake is moist, dense, and has a deep chocolate flavor that a lot of gourmet cupcakes lack. The mousse is pretty thick for mousse and carries a lighter cocoa flavor. I really love this cake; it is super good! It's very rich though; I cut it into 1/16ths and eat it very slowly.
The Sister doesn't like it so much; she's not a fan of dark chocolate. I know, right?!

They still carry this cake at Trader Joe's. I just picked it up yesterday.
ReplyDeleteA convenience store like 7-11?? Trader Joe's is an upscale market that specializes in organic and natural foods.
ReplyDeleteHaha, should I have said Famina! instead... that'd probably be more apt. You can get some pretty good bargains at Trader Joe's though hence the convenience comparison.
ReplyDeleteThey don't carry it anymore! Darn, loved that cake.
ReplyDeleteI almost took your review seriously until I saw the 7-11 comparison. You're clearly delusional.
