Review: Hostess - Strawberry CupCakes

Hostess's new Strawberry CupCakes offer a strawberry twist to their traditional cupcakes with strawberry cake and icing in additional to the same creamy filling and squiggle.

A box of 8 individually-wrapped cakes is priced around $3.99 but I picked this box up on sale for $2.50.

Since starting Brand Eating, there have been very few times where I ate something for review and thought, "This is horrible." But Hostess's Strawberry CupCakes are horrible.

And, just in case I was imagining things, I had both The Sister and The Sister-in-law guinea pig two of them. Neither of them finished their cupcakes and one commented, "Maybe, it was a bad batch?" to which I replied, "I don't know but I'm not buying another box to find out." Besides, it's not like it tastes spoiled or anything, the flavor and textures were just bad. Other comments thrown about included "Don't they have product testers?" and "I can't finish this..."
I was a bit dubious about eating one when I first unwrapped the cupcake. For one, the frosting looks and feels weird. It's a bit waxy and reminds me of fondant. The Sister-in-law pointed out that fondant is worse but still, it's not exactly a favorable comparison. Also, the cupcake also smells kinda of weird; kinda fruity but not. More importantly, it doesn't smell like something tasty.
With some reservations I took a bite. I can't really describe how exactly it tastes but not like any strawberry cake I've ever eaten. According to the ingredients there is some strawberry used but the end result is a very artificial, very sweet semi-strawberry flavor that lingers on the tongue to my dismay.

This one is definitely on the short list of "worst things I've ever eaten for The Blog."
