Feature: 5 Fun Facts About Taco Bell's Doritos Locos Taco

For those of you who don't know, I was invited out to Taco Bell Headquarters (known as "RSC" for "Restaurant Support Center") earlier this week to hear about the new Doritos Locos Taco, get a tour, and check out the Taco Bell Test kitchen.

Along with details on the launch of the taco, I put together a list of 5 fun facts regarding the Doritos Locos Taco gleaned from the event:

1. Originally, the idea was to just sprinkle some Doritos seasoning on a Taco Bell taco. Fortunately, the initial tested observed that it was like they took a taco and sprinkled some Doritos seasoning on it and were less than enthused.

2. The sleeve is more to keep Taco Bell employee gloves clean of Doritos seasoning (so they don't get Doritos seasoning on the other stuff they make) rather than to keep your hands clean... but it does a good job of both!

3. 1 in 3 customers in test markets bought a Doritos Locos Taco with their order.

4. One of the initial questions on the Doritos brand side was "But how are you going to make a triangular taco?" because the triangle is the trademark Doritos shape. See how the thinking works? I imagine there was a fair amount of discussion before they got to the final product.

5. There are over 130 different varieties of Doritos around the world. Greg Creed, the CEO of Taco Bell, express the possibility of making a Doritos Locos Taco of a flavor that isn't sold in the U.S. So if you have suggestions, start contacting Taco Bell customer service now!
