Frozen Friday: Stouffer's - Chicken in Barbeque Sauce

Stouffer's Chicken in Barbeque Sauce is one of their Signature Classics, which I take to me they've been making it for a while. The frozen entree features grilled white meat chicken strips in a barbecue sauce and a cheddar cheese potato bake with bacon.

I bought a 10-ounce box at my local supermarket on sale for $2.00 (regularly $3.99).

I think "chicken in barbeque sauce" is a more marketing savvy way of saying "chicken awash in a sea of barbeque." I'd guess maybe half the weight of the entree is from the sauce alone.
The sauce itself was decent if of a thin, watery consistency and generic taste. Besides the excessive amount drowning the chicken, it was largely forgettable but tasted fine.

The chicken itself was tender and sported some nice grill marks. Flavor-wise, they were largely a vehicle for the barbecue sauce.
The most enjoyable part of the meal was the cheddar cheese potato bake with a nicely, thickened cheddar cheese sauce topped with a panko (or panko like) crust. The flavors were simple but tasty. Take the potatoes out and replace them with macaroni and you have yourself a very good mac and cheese. Of course with microwave cooking, the panko crust turns out mostly soggy which kinda defeats the point.
Not sure I'd get this again, I like the potatoes and the chicken was fine but I don't feel like I'm getting much value when I'm mostly getting barbecue sauce.

  1. I use to love this when I was a kid. Although, I've notice the chicken has changed the BBQ sounds like the same sweet thin stuff I use to love.

  3. Yeah, I can see that. The BBQ sea seems like it might be fun for the young 'uns.
