Review: IHOP - Red Velvet Pancakes

IHOP's Red Velvet Pancakes are something IHOP is testing out in some areas including my local restaurant. They're drizzled with a cream cheese icing before being dusted with powdered sugar and finished with a dollop of whipped topping.

A stack of 4 pancakes was selling for $4.99 but I shared a combo which came with 2 pancakes, bacon, eggs, sausage, and hashed browns for $8.69.

Upon seeing them on the menu, I thought IHOP's Red Velvet Pancakes could be really good or really bad. Fortunately, they were pretty good! Like eating a red velvet cake but in pancake form. It feels kinda guilty because it's more like eating dessert but I guess pancakes in general are really dessert.

The pancakes were moist and fluffy with a pronounced cocoa flavor. They were also pretty big and with a good thickness. The icing was a bit over-sweet but went well with the pancakes. I didn't really eat the whipped topping since the icing was plenty of sugar. Definitely worth a try for red velvet fans!

My breakfast for late night dinner hit a bit of a snag on the rest of the combo though. The sausage tasted and smelled like they had been cooked in rancid oil. I thought about sending it back but doubted they had new oil to cook new sausages for me. The rest of the platter was mostly okay; The bacon could have been crunchier and the eggs were a bit dry but still okay.

The hash browns were standard but satisfying and that's really the only thing I really wanted from the combo.

But yeah, Red Velvet Pancakes at IHOP: good stuff!
