Review: Emerald Breakfast on the Go - Berry Nut Blend

Emerald's Breakfast on the Go Berry Nut Blend is a fairly new addition to the Emerald line up and is basically a small pouch of trail mix for when you don't have time to sit down for a proper breakfast. The Berry Nut Blend comes with roasted peanuts, granola clusters, dried cranberries, yogurt-covered raisins, glazed walnuts, and dried blueberries.

A box comes with five 1.5-ounce bags and retails for $3.59 at my local Albertsons.

If you've seen the commercials, the thought is that granola bars crumble and make a mess and that a bag of granola is somehow neater. The thing is while you can eat a bar with one hand, you'll typically eat a bag of trail mix with two hands; one hand holds the bag and pours the contents into the other hand. With stuff like granola, you're going to get tiny bits that fall into the gaps and lines of your hand and you're left to either unceremoniously slurp them up with your mouth, sprinkle them into your gaping maw, or you put the bags down and pick them up with your other hand. Either way, it's an inelegant solution at best.

So no, not really "breakfast on the go" but more like a portable breakfast. You probably don't want to run out the door while dumping a bag in your mouth unless you want some crumbs on your shirt.

That being said, I like the mix. It's a balanced blend of nuts, dried fruit, with some yogurt tartness and sweet walnuts to liven it up. I'm not sure how filling it is, but I like dried berries, crunchy nuts and granola.

In sum, I like the mix, the choice of berries and nuts is a good one. I'm not sure that the size of the bag is going to cut it to get you through to lunch and I would caution against eating these on the go. It's not chewing gum; don't walk and eat these at the same time.
