Review: Häagen-Dazs - Salted Caramel Ice Cream Bars

Häagen-Dazs Salted Caramel Ice Cream Bars are a limited edition version of their standard chocolate-covered vanilla ice cream bars. Each bar features two salted caramel ribbons blended into vanilla ice cream and coated in milk chocolate.

If you want vanilla ice cream and chocolate over "frozen dairy dessert" and "chocolaty coating," you'll pay a premium as a box of three 3-ounce bars retails for about $4.99.

You'll notice in the pictures the creeping frost that threatened to consume my Häagen-Dazs bar as I snapped my photos; it was really hot and condensation happens quite quickly in the summer.

According to the box, the flavor is inspired by fleur de sel ("flower of salt"), a classic French dessert of sea salt and caramel. A quick search of "fleur de sel" just brings up hand-harvested French sea salt. According to the Internet, the dessert is typically called "fleur de sel caramel" at least here in the U.S.

The bar is mostly classic Häagen-Dazs with delicious rich, fairly-thick milk chocolate and creamy vanilla ice cream. As with similar bars, the shell tends to break off in pieces and sometimes fall off (more so than thinner coats with the added weight); I eat it over the wrapper to catch wayward pieces (at over a buck a bar, must not waste good chocolate!).

The salted caramel ribbon is a liquid river of buttery sweetness (think Caramello but slightly more liquid). On the initial bite, I didn't quite catch the salty flavor, but ensuing bites delivered a pleasant blend of salty and sweet. For good measure, I licked one of the ribbons--very sweet and quite salty, but tasty indeed!

It you think salty and sweet would be great in an ice cream bar and don't mind the price, Häagen-Dazs won't disappoint. These are really good.
