Frozen Friday: Red Baron - Classic Crust Special Deluxe Pizza

Red Baron's Classic Crust Special Deluxe Pizza is their tried-and-true frozen pizza crust topped with two cheese, sausage, mushrooms, pepperoni, black olives, green and red peppers, and onions.

I scored a 22.95-ounce pizza on sale for $2.99; they're normally $6.99.

The box touts an "awesome new recipe!" with "hearty toppings" and "premium cheese."

The term "cardboard pizza" applies here. The thin crust was more or less like crispy cardboard without any flavor to recommend it. The crumb was dense and bready. Overall, the crust is really what you think of when you think "frozen pizza"and not in a good way.

The tomato sauce was a bit too sweet and liquidy.

The cheese was decent; melted but not too much stretch to it.

The best part of the pizza was the toppings. While you're not going to get any of the charring or crisping of a pizzeria pizza in a home oven (the temperature doesn't go high enough), the toppings were more flavorful than some of the chain pizzas I've had. I could taste each of the individual toppings in every bite. The pepperoni, in particular, was pretty thick. The distribution wasn't exactly even, but you can shift them prior to baking.

For $2.99, Red Baron's Classic Crust Special Deluxe Pizza is an okay (and not "awesome") way to feed 3 or 4 people on the cheap, but at the $7 price point, there are a lot of better pizzas out there including other varieties by the Red Baron.
