Frozen Friday: Healthy Choice - Classic Meatloaf

Healthy Choice's Classic Meatloaf meal features a meatloaf with brown gravy, whipped potatoes, a side of sweet corn, and an apple cranberry dessert.

A 12-ounce box retails for $3.99 at my local supermarket ($2.50 or so on sale).

The meatloaf was much smoother and finely ground than shown on the box. It didn't turn out so great: it was rubbery, dense, and a bit chewy with herby flavor.

The brown gravy had a nice note of tomato-y ketchup flavor to it, which is nice for the meat loaf, but was a bit unusual with the mashed potatoes.

The mashed potatoes were whipped smooth, slightly buttery, and came in a small dollop. Since this is a better-for-you option, there's less mashed potatoes than typical, but enough to satisfy a craving.

The corn was pretty good: a mix of white and yellow sweet corn kernels. They turned out slightly overcooked, but were still tasty.

The apple cranberry dessert was like an apple-cranberry compote with quite a bit of syrup. It was spiced with cinnamon and had that cranberry bite dulled by a lot of sweetness. The apples retains just the slightest bit of texture and the cranberries were cooked to mush.

Overall, Healthy Choice's Classic Meatloaf frozen dinner was a fairly middling effort with no real high or low points. The mashed potatoes and corn were my favorite parts of the meal while the rest was just okay for frozen food. It could probably stand to add some more veggies if they're going for a healthy angle.
