Wendy's Bacon Portabella Mushroom Melt is a kinda new, limited-time burger ("kinda" because it just adds an extra slice of cheese to a previous limited-time offer). It features a quarter pound beef patty, two slices of American cheese, three slices of thick-cut applewood-smoked bacon, and portabella mushrooms in a cheddar cheese sauce.
My local Wendy's offers them for
$4.39, but I received mine for free courtesy of Wendy's.
I tried one of the mushrooms off the bat and there was a pretty strong mushroom flavor. It mellows out when mixed in with everything else.
I liked the individual ingredients to the burger: the bacon was thick, tasty, and crunchy; the cheddar cheese sauce was creamy, but a bit salty; the bun was squishy soft; and the beef patty was thick, coarsely ground, and as juicy as a well done patty can be.
While the Bacon Portabella Mushroom Melt was mostly good, the combined flavors also contained a pretty sharp note of salt. I also felt like the burger wanted some onions; they would have cut the salt a little and added a bit of zing. I would definitely ask for onions with the burger if you opt to try it (unless you hate onions of course).
Still, all-in-all,
Wendy's Bacon Portabella Melt was pretty solid -- a slightly stepped up burger for the meat-and-cheese set.
