Review: McDonald's - Crispy Chicken CBO Sandwich

McDonald's Crispy Chicken CBO (Cheddar Bacon Onion) sandwich is their latest limited-time burger and features a crispy fried chicken filet, hickory-smoked bacon, caramelized grilled onions, two slices of white cheddar and a creamy mustard sauce. It's all served on a toasted bakery-style bun that offers some whole grains.

I picked up one of these at my local McDonald's for $4.49.

Much of the sandwich's flavor comes from the mustard sauce which is yogurt based giving it a bit of a tang and incorporates Dijon mustard and horseradish which imparts a very solid mustard taste. I'm not sure it goes that well with the crispy chicken though, I think it would go better with beef or pork. There's a slight bit of sweetness to it.

The chicken filet was crunchy, mostly moist, and lightly seasoned. It was pretty good.

Bacon wasn't crispy, but added a bit of smokiness. With competitors like Wendy's and Burger King trading up to thicker cut bacon, McDonald's really needs to follow suit. Their bacon doesn't lag in flavor so much as texture.

For being a large part of the sandwich, I didn't notice the onions much. I think maybe fresh ones would have fared better.

The white cheddar used is pasteurized process (i.e. made like American cheese). It was creamy, but with less flavor than American cheese and lacked any hint of distinctive notes of cheddar. If it wasn't marketed as white cheddar, I might guess it was white American cheese... It should really be the "Cheese Bacon Onion?"

Overall, the Crispy Chicken CBO felt like less than the sum of its parts. While it sounded like a nice idea, the pieces just didn't fit together quite right and ended up off kilter especially since the cheese and onion portions were lacking.

  1. I personally LOVE the CBO sandwiches. I've had the crispy chicken and the angus and both had TONS of grilled onions that were so flavorful and yummy with the creamy mustard sauce.

The CBO is definitely a new fav from McDs, only complaint from me is the price.

  2. I mentally staggered backwards and fell, hitting my head and suffering a severe concussion when I saw those pics showing the vatious vittles embedded within.

I propose hazardous duty pay for the poor soul having to concoct that abomination.

  4. When I got the Crispy Chicken CBOm the patty was like a bland chicken select. The mustard sauce had promise but i found it very bitter. If the onions were cooked better and the cheddar actually had a cheddar flavor, it would have been a much better sandwich. I wish they had better bacon as well

  5. I have a major complaint about this so called grilled/crispy chicken sandwich.
I ordered grilled, and they gave me crispy. They claim to use whole grain buns....I had a whole grain top, but a cheese burger top on the bottom. What's up with that?
I will never eat at McDonald's again. False advertisement to the fullest.

  6. Varies greatly from location and freshness. Really good when it is freshly prepared.

  7. Haha, yeah. That's the problem with most fast food chains. It's supposed to be consistent, but it varies quite a bit usually depending on how the franchisee runs it.

  8. The problem i have with mcdonalds is that they over sauce the sandwiches even if i ask for half the sauce its still alot sort of kills the rest of the flavors for me. This one was okay but the sauce was too salty and over flavored with fakeness i dont think i will be trying this one again!
