Review: Taco Bell - Spicy Buffalo Chicken Griller

Taco Bell's Spicy Buffalo Chicken Griller is purported to offer the taste of buffalo wings in a portable appetizer for one. To achieve this, Taco Bell goes with their marinated white meat chicken, spicy lava sauce (from their Volcano menu), and (reduced fat) sour cream.

The price is nice at 99 cents per Loaded Griller.

When I first saw these, I assumed they were the same size at Taco Bell's now-discontinued Taquitos. I was wrong. They are the same size as Taco Bell's Bean Burrito, which is more a full-on entree than an appetizer.

All Taco Bell burritos should be grilled like this. Grilling/pressing the flour tortilla just gives it a nice, thin crispiness while still retaining the soft tortilla texture underneath. My Spicy Buffalo Griller was grilled just perfectly and fold really well; no folded rolls of extra tortilla to chew on.

The chicken was flavorful, moist, and tender; there was a surprisingly good amount (although that I've found that the amount can vary a fair bit).

The spicy lava sauce is really spicy; I got a big glop of the stuff at the tail end of the burrito that had me choking a little from the heat. It's spicy, tangy, and a bit creamy, but it's not like Buffalo sauce. The tang is different--more of a tomato tang than the sharp vinegar/hot sauce tang of your standard Buffalo sauce. That being said, it works well here.

Taco Bell's sour cream isn't very sour and serves mostly to cut against the lava sauce. Most of the flavor of the Spicy Buffalo Griller is in the lava sauce and the chicken.

At the end of the day, Taco Bell's Spicy Buffalo Chicken Griller was really good and a great value to boot, but more like a Volcano Chicken Griller than a Spicy Buffalo one.

  1. This one is too spicy for my taste. I tried the other two Grillers, and I liked the Beefy Nacho. However, this item needs a bit less beef and more cheese. And, it needs to be eaten fast, when there is still some crispiness in the nachos. Otherwise, they'll get soggy. I wasn't impressed with the Loaded Potato one, I'm not going to order that one again.

  3. Probably to give a rough size comparison, so people can decide if it's worth the purchase.

  5. It does seem considerably more spicy that many of the other menu items. That said, I am an individual that loves spicy food and it's a great deal for 99 cents. I get this over the beefy nacho, although it's great in it's own right.

I'll be blunt and just say that the loaded potato sounds like a good idea, but has never been executed well when I ordered it. You're better off stepping up to the half pound cheesy potato for just a little more.
