Joe-Joe's are
Trader Joe's version of Oreo cookies. The
Candy Cane Joe-Joe's are a seasonal item similar to
Candy Cane Creme Oreos, but without the food coloring.
They cost the same as Candy Cane Creme Oreos at
$2.99, but you get a fair bit more (16 ounces versus 10.5).
The chocolate wafers are pretty similar to Oreos, I don't think I can tell the difference between the two. Even the patterns are very similar (Oreo on the left, Joe-Joe on the right):
Oreos are just slightly darker and actually list chocolate as an ingredient (Joe-Joe's are made with cocoa). Interestingly, Oreos weren't the first creme-filled chocolate wafer sandwiches. Nabisco actually made the Oreo in imitation of Sunshine's Hydrox cookies, which I always thought were Oreo knock-offs growing up. Sunshine is probably best known today for Cheez-It cheese crackers.
Where the Candy Cane Joe-Joe varies from the Oreo version is in the intensity of the creme. The peppermint is a heady aroma that permeates the cream and delivers a lasting cool mint freshness that lingers on the tongue for quite a while. It might be too much mint for some, but I like it. The candy cane bits add a grainy crunchiness to the creme and an extra burst of mint flavor and sweetness.
I usually try to get a box of these around the holidays every year. The intense minty flavor is really nice combined with the chocolate crunchy cookie.
