Around the World: MOS Burger - Focaccia with U-shaped Sausage

Japanese burger chain, MOS Burger, offers two limited-time Focaccias on the menu this winter.

The one of particular note is the Barbecue Focaccia, which features a U-shaped, grilled, smoked sauce cradling a mix of cabbage, onions, eggplant, and tomatoes stewed in barbecue sauce, served on a bed of crispy shredded cabbage, and folded inside a warm, toasted focaccia bread.

The other available focaccia sandwich is the Croquette Focaccia. It's main feature is a Japanese-style potato and onion croquette on a bed of shredded cabbage topped with tonkotsu sauce (a tangy soy-based sauce). It's labeled as "vegetarian," but as any vegetarian who has been to Japan can attest, they manage to have fish  in almost everything so you might take the label with a grain of salt if you happen upon it.

The Barbecue Foccacia is offered at 360 yen (~$4.02 US) and the Croquette Foccacia is offered at 320 yen (~$3.57 US)

The barbecue version is especially popular; so much so that the chain is unable to meet the demand and therefore is cutting its run short as they're running out of ingredients for the sandwich.

MOS Burger Focaccias were actually first introduced in Japan in 2007. They were also offered in Singapore back in 2011.

  1. Hmmm, the flavours sound alright but not sure how easy they would be to eat with the bread being folded in half rather than separate buns. Some of the filling would fall out more easily I think. I think more fast food places should offer sausage/pork in general though, a sausage patty, cheese and onion and/or peppers (like a breakfast burrito mix) in a bun would be a tasty value menu item.
