Review: Green Burrito - San Diego Burrito

Carl's Jr.-Green Burrito's  new San Diego Burrito is only available at Carl's Jr. and Green Burrito co-branded stores. It consists of charbroiled steak and French fries rolled up in a flour tortilla along with guacamole, salsa, and shredded Jack and cheddar.

My local Carl's Jr. restaurant offers them for $4.29 each.

Beyond the fries, the San Diego Burrito is fairly run-of-the-milk. The size falls somewhere between a Chipotle burrito and a value burrito at Taco Bell.

The steak didn't seem charbroiled. It tasted and felt more like it had been slow-simmered at some point and offered a soft, slightly rubbery texture with not much flavor. It might have been better if the steak were accompanied by diced onions and the like for added taste.

The guacamole and the cheeses didn't add much in the way of flavor either, but the salsa added some tanginess and a slight kick.

Without the fries, the San Diego Burrito would be a fairly mediocre fast food buurrito. With the fries, it's still fairly mediocre, but slightly more interesting. The fries don't add anything in the way of crunch, nestled as they are within the steamy confines of the flour tortilla. What they do add is a decent, slightly greasy, but plain potato flavor.

Overall, Green Burrito's San Diego Burrito was decent but a bit boring. The flavors and texture just kinda melded into each other and lacked definition. There's no strong or distinctive flavors here to balance out the burrito.

  1. I had this a few weeks ago. I thought the steak tasted pretty weird. The steak was all on one side of the burrito. I didn't mind the burrito so much initially because I thought it was decent with the fries. Definitely not as good as a Cali Burrito (even less a Cali Burrito from SD), but when I tasted the steak I thought it was blah. Sadly, I haven't found a place in LA that does it just as well as SD.

This burrito could have been made better simply by spreading out the ingredients more instead of having them secluded to one side like the fries and steak were. Overall disappointing burrito.

  3. I'm not sure that would have been significantly better. The burrito was small enough so that I could actually get a bite with all the ingredients. The ingredients just weren't all that great.

  4. Try out Benitos in Santa Monica or Taqueria Chihuahua in Marina del Rey. ALMOST as good as SD.
