I was offered the opportunity to sample the new yogurt pre-launch and received several 5.3-ounce cups in the mail courtesy of Yoplait. The suggested retail price will be $1.29 a cup.
The new Greek will come in six flavors: Blueberry, Coconut, Pineapple, Strawberry Raspberry, Tangerine, and Vanilla. Unfortunately the cups I received were all Pineapple flavor so I can't really tell you much about the other flavors.
I tried the previous/current version a while back and the new Greek yogurt exhibits about the same consistency. That's to say it's slightly thicker than regular yogurt, but isn't as thick as more traditional Greek yogurt brands such as Chobani or Fage. I prefer the thicker traditional variety if only because it feels like you're eating something substantial even as you eat the same amount. Gone are the gelatin and corn starch of the previous version.
There's a light pleasant pineapple flavor throughout the creamy yogurt and no aftertaste. The blended fruit comes in little bits of pineapple that taste pretty fresh. It's not as sweet as regular yogurt. There's also none of that syrup that you get with fruit-on-the-bottom yogurts. The overall effect is really nice; like if you mixed in fruit into pineapple yogurt.
Overall, if the pineapple flavor holds true to the rest, Yoplait's new Greek Yogurt is a definite improvement over the previous/current product and, with it's light flavor and more substantial thickness, I like it better (although not cheaper) than regular yogurt as well.
