I picked up an 8.5-oz bag for $2.99.
As I opened the bag, a not-so-good aroma wafted out of it. These are the least appetizing-smelling chips I've ever come across. It smells of char and grease, which I guess is kinda like a flame-grilled steak, but not in a mouth-watering way. It's more like the grease that's left on the grill after the steak is done and the grill has cooled.
The ingredients include "natural beef type flavor" but the "type" must be fat, because that's what it tastes of. That combined with a chargrill flavor and a bit of steak seasoning makes for a rather weird chip. I don't have a problem eating it, but I don't really enjoy it.
Overall, Flame Grilled Steak Flavored Ruffles feels like one of those products that are made just for the hell of it. I'm somewhat impressed that they managed to capture the char and fatty attributes of a steak, but whiffed on the beef portion... although I can't say I've ever thought, "Man, I wish they made a beef-flavored chip."

Too bad, I'll skip them. You should try Ruffles Queso, they are amazing!
ReplyDeleteI felt the exact same way. I didn't have a problem slowly finishing the bag, but I didn't look forward to it either. They were thoroughly average, or a bit below. I picked up a bag hoping to relive Synder's discontinued Grilled Steak and Onion chips and was highly disappointed. Oh well, maybe next time.
ReplyDeleteI still wanna try them. Now I just need to find them.
ReplyDeleteI found them at a WaWa gas station. Wasn't thrilled with them. Easy for mindless eating when you stare and realize you've consumed half a bag and feel just as empty as when you started.
ReplyDeleteI've seen them at a Target and a Walmart. I went to another Target location that didn't carry them though.
ReplyDeleteI've seen them at Safeway, though I haven't tried them myself.
