Review: Jack in the Box - BBQ Really Big Chicken Sandwich

Jack in the Box's limited-time BBQ Really Big Chicken Sandwich features two breaded chicken patties, two slices of cheese, bacon, barbecue sauce, and grilled onions on a toasted bun.

It's being sold for $3.99 in a combo with small fries and a 20-ounce drink.

Interestingly, the sandwich came in a clam shell rather than wrapped in waxed paper with the chief benefit being that my Really Big Chicken Sandwich wasn't squished down.

As you may be able to tell, there was plenty of chicken to go round. It's of the mechanically-separated variety and feel a lot like the ones you can get at the frozen food aisle, but that's what you get at this price point. The patties had a nice, crisp breading and were suitably moist within.

Jack's bacon got kinda lost in the sandwich. It wasn't until halfway through that I even noticed there was bacon. It ended up outshone by the smoky sweet barbecue sauce.

The cheese is your standard American and was melted though. I tend to like cheese better on a hamburger patty rather than breaded chicken, but I'm rather ambivalent about it here.

The bun is your standard plain burger bun. It was as expected and kept my hands clean.

The barbecue sauce was pretty enjoyable and even-heeled if a bit generic (which is really all you can ask of cheap fast food). It was applied in a layer on the top and bottom bun. The sauce provided the main flavor cue for the burger and was complemented quite nicely by slightly softened sweet onions. They were cooked quite well and managed to hold onto just a shade of onion crunch.

Overall, Jack in the Box's Really Big Chicken makes for fairly enjoyable cheap eats. The barbecue sauce and onions were nice and there was plenty of chicken with the double patties.
