They come six cakes to a 9-ounce box and retail for $3.99 a box. I received these courtesy of Sara Lee though.
These strike me as a cross between a Sara Lee Pound Cake and a Golden Twinkie. It's not as dense as the pound cake but is a bit more shelf-stable. Unlike a Twinkie, there's not creme here; it's also not as spongy and light as a Twinkie.
The texture is nice enough; not quite moist but soft and not too crumbly. The top of the cake has a slight glaze to it.
In taste, it's like yellow cake with a touch of butter, which is to say it tasted similar to a Twinkie but was slightly richer. It's enjoyable and not overly sweet.
Overall, Sara Lee's new Buttery Sunshine Cakes are fairly good but might be a little plain for some. Like most snack cakes, it's ideal for packing for lunch, but is also prime to be topped or frosted at home.

Great review! These do seem like basic Twinkies, and after tracking down a Twinkie I was very disappointed. Don't think I'll put the effort into these. Why is there such a cult behind Twinkies?
ReplyDeleteI've yet to try either this or the stuffed crust hot dog pizza, but going on Dominos hot dog topping I'm not missing out much. Do you guys have any odd stuff crusts only in America?
ReplyDeleteI think it's mostly because a lot of people grew up eating them.
