Review: Sara Lee - Devil's Food Creme Cakes

Sara Lee's Devil's Food Creme Cakes feature snack-sized devil's food cake topped with a layer of creme and covered with a chocolaty coating.

A 12.5-ounce box of 8 individually-wrapped cakes retails for $3.99, but I received these courtesy of Sara Lee.

Like the Buttery Sunshine Cakes, these don't have a direct analog in the Hostess line up, although in composition they are most like Suzy Qs and Ding Dongs (or Swiss Rolls from Little Debbie).

The ones I received looked a bit worse for the wear from mailing, but tasted fine.

In appearance, they look like chocolate Twinkies with a chocolate coating. The coating is the same stuff you find on chocolate mini-donuts. It forms a thin, slightly hardened shell around the cake and is generically chocolaty with a lingering somewhat oily mouthfeel.

The creme is also like what you find in Hostess snacks. It's sweet with a whipped cream-like texture.

The cake inside retains a pleasant chocolate flavor with a touch of dark chocolate notes. Combined with the creme and coating, it gets fairly sweet and nicely chocolaty.

Overall, Sara Lee's Devil's Food Creme Cakes make a decent snack-sized dessert for the chocolate lovers. It doesn't hit the creamy or rich notes of chocolate, but that's fairly standard for the segment and so are these cakes.
