Frozen Friday: Totino's - Jalapeno Popper Rolls

Totino's Jalapeno Popper Rolls are a new take on their popular Pizza Rolls. Rather than being filled with mozzarella, pepperoni, and sauce, the Jalapeno Popper Rolls are filled with just mozzarella and jalapenos.

A 17.4-ounce bag was $2.99 on sale.

While I'm a fan of jalapeno poppers, I tend to favor the nacho cheese ones over the cream cheese due to their sharper flavor. Mozzarella being one of the more subtler cheese, Totino's Jalapeno Popper Rolls veer very close a cream cheese filling.

The cheese melts very nicely and gooey-like, but lacks in the flavor department beyond a general creaminess. The prevailing flavor, then, is plain jalapeno, which I tend to prefer more as a complement rather than the main event. The jalapenos actually retain a fair bit of their fibrous quality (similar to fresh bell peppers) and are pretty spicy.

The crust develops a very light, crispy shell out of the toaster oven. If you want something crispier go with a pan. I don't recommend making these in the microwave as they turn out a bit gummy that way. Any way you cook them, the cheese should be piping hot so be mindful of burning your tongue.

Overall, Totino's Jalapeno Popper Rolls are a bland combination of cream and jalapeno spice that falls a little flat (despite the words "bold" in big capitalized lettering on the front of the bag). You might want to go with a little sauce if you're angling to try these (I tried them with ranch but that wasn't quite working for me either). As for me, I'll stick to their Pizza Rolls.
