Review: Sonic - Southwest Chipotle Breakfast Burrito

Sonic's new Southwest Chipotle Breakfast Burrito features sausage, fire roasted red and green peppers, smoked chipotle sauce, grilled onions, scrambled eggs, tots, and melted cheddar cheese wrapped in a flour tortilla.

I picked one up for $3.39.

The first thing I noticed when unwrapping the burrito was that it was rolled fairly tightly. Usually with these type of fast food chain burritos, they're folded really loosely and tend to spill out so this was a welcomed surprise (or course, I've had other burritos from Sonic that were wrapped loosely; different location though).

The Southwest Chipotle Breakfast Burrito is a variation on their SuperSonic Breakfast Burrito but with peppers and chipotle sauce standing in for the jalapenos and tomatoes.

The chipotle sauce adds a savory smokiness and a rather mild heat, while the red and green peppers add a little texture, taste, and sweetness.

The rest of the burrito was pretty standard and mostly egg. The sausage pieces had a nice sear to them and the onions add a sweet pop where they're encountered. The tots did not manage to retain their crispness but added a salty bit of potato flavor.

The flour tortilla was pretty soft and moist. I wished that it was grilled but that's just my preference.

Overall, Sonic's Southwest Chipotle Breakfast Burrito adds a nice touch of smokiness to a fairly standard albeit well-assembled fast food breakfast burrito.

  1. They've had these before when it was on a limited time. One of the few items that I would go to Sonic to get food. One of the others was the Double Patty Melt with Grilled Onions. Those I really miss alot.

  5. I can second that. My local butcher shop is doing deep fried turkeys at $7.49/lb!

  6. They look kind of similar to a British treacle tart without the breadcrumbs and eggs. Also gypsy tart which is sugar and evaporated milk.

  7. I just called and found one left after the thanksgiving rush and tempted to buy it for Christmas... are the locations just sent the turkeys frozen to each location and that's how we buy it? I'm wondering cause isn't that a long time since it was cooked?
