Review: Sonic - Holiday Mint Molten Cake Sundae

Sonic's Holiday Mint Molten Cake Sundae is new this year and features a molten chocolate cake filled with hot fudge and covered with vanilla ice cream, more hot fudge, crushed holiday mints, whipped topping, and a maraschino cherry.

It goes for $4.49 at my nearest Sonic but I received this one courtesy of Sonic.

I ate this on a fairly cold morning... outside. I'm not one who prefers eating cold foods when it's cold, so I found myself wishing Sonic had indoor seating (I'm also one of those guys who likes to keep my car clean and refuses to eat in it).

The molten cake portion was fairly dense, reasonably chocolaty, and a little on the dry side. It reminds me of the cake portion of a Hostess cupcake. There's a little bit of warm hot fudge syrup in the middle that I wished there was more of.

The vanilla ice cream was pretty standard with a nice creaminess to it and a texture like thick soft serve.

The mint flavor comes wholly from the crushed mints which means the sundae was quite minty at the edges but not so much in the center. It makes for a fairly varied sundae that lets you create your own spoonfuls as you like.

Overall, like most sundaes, the Holiday Mint Molten Cake Sundae feels like something you could make at home. The ice cream is (possibly) softer, but other than that you could just buy a Hostess chocolate cupcake, plop a scoop of ice cream or two on top, drizzle some hot fudge and topped with crushed peppermints, whipped cream (or topping) and a cherry. It's nice enough, but I prefer a bit more mint to fit the holiday season.
