Frozen Friday: Bertolli - Italian Sausage Italian Style Torta

Bertolli's Italian Sausage Italian Style Torta is basically a pot pie with lasagna-type fillings. Specifically, it's a flaky pie crust sprinkled with Italian seasoning and filled with sausage in marinara sauce layered with ricotta, parmesan, and mozzarella cheese.

A 10-oz pie was $2.47.

A Italian-style torta is basically a meat and cheese pie or tart (I'm more familiar with the Mexican torta, which is a sandwich). This doesn't quite fit some of the pictures I've seen, but it's certainly good in its own right.

The crust is very much like on a Marie Callender's pot pie (not surprising as both products are made under license by ConAgra) but with a strong garlic flavor from the seasoning. It was slightly flaky and nicely crispy.

Inside it wasn't filled to the brim like some pot pies, which reduces the chance of a messy spill as you nuke it in the microwave.

There was a good amount of coarse sausage with a tasty, herby quality paired with an intense, fairly thick tomato sauce.

On the very bottom was a thick layer of mostly ricotta cheese, which lent to the lasagna in a pie crust feeling, but also provided a creamy balance to the sausage and sauce.

Overall, Bertolli's Italian Sausage Torta was really good. There was a good variety of flavor and textures, and everything worked really well together. It's a very nice twist on the classic pot pie.
