Frozen Friday - Wonka - Vanilla Banana Peel-a-Pop

Wonka's Vanilla Banana Peel-a-Pop features a vanilla frozen dessert core surrounded by an edible yellow banana-flavored shell that you can peel off like a real banana.

An 8-count, 12.9 fl oz-box was $3.49.

I thought these were a pretty interesting idea when I heard about them and was looking forward to trying them.

They're pretty small. Maybe a little smaller than a popsicle, which makes for a light dessert.

The way the Peel-a-Pop works is you're supposed to bite into it, which then gives you an opening to peel the shell. The shell has four guidelines half-cut into it where it separates as you peel it.

The problem is it doesn't always work; I didn't have any problems with the first pop I tried, but with a subsequent one, the shell didn't want to let go of the vanilla ice cream (technically, it's frozen dairy dessert as the amount of milk fat it contains doesn't rise to "ice cream" level) inside.

When it does work, it's a pretty fun and nifty effect. I found it pretty entertaining. The shell actually has a bit of the slightly smooth, waxen quality of a banana peel. It seems to be made of some sort of gelatin (or other gelled substance) and isn't sticky like a normal ice pop. There's a light, enjoyable banana flavor to it and it's more cohesive and not as messy as a Creamsicle or the like.

Inside, it's a very standard vanilla "ice cream." Like the shell, it's a light flavor but is pretty nice alone or with the shell.

Overall, Wonka's Vanilla Banana Peel-a-Pop makes for a nice distraction and a little entertainment to go with a pretty tasty frozen dessert pop.
