Review: Trader Joe's - Potato Chips with South African Style Seasoning

Trader Joe's new Potato Chips with South African Style Seasoning are described on the bag as "classic potato chips with an exotic smoked flavor." According to the ingredients, that means they're seasoned with chili pepper, sea salt, garlic, basil, and parsley.

I picked up a 10-oz bag for $2.29.

Basically, these chips feature the same seasoning you might find on the grill at a barbecue in South Africa.

The ingredients and the description probably make you think that doesn't sound too different from what you might put on some meat for the grill or pan here in the States. And you'd be right, but we tend not to have steak- or grilled-flavored chips (except for this weird incident).

Trader Joe's did it right though. The South African Style Seasoning couples an herby blend to a measured smokiness with just a touch of heat and a rich, savory undertone. It differs from barbecue-flavored chips in that it lacks the tangy or sweet qualities.

Overall, Trader Joe's Potato Chips with South African Style Seasonings are exceptional and well done, especially if you're looking for a novel twist on a smoky flavor.
