Popeyes' Spiced Pumpkin and Cream Cheese Pie features a deep-fried, individual turnover-style pie with a flaky crust and a combination of spiced pumpkin and cream cheese filling.
I bought one for
99 cents.
The crust was wonderfully crispy, just a little sweet, and sported a few of those thin, deep-fried bubbles, not as much as the since discontinued McDonald's pies of old, but they were still very nice. Rather than turning out dry, the crumb actually had a good bit of moisture.
Inside, the pumpkin pie filling was somewhat liquidy (due to the heat I imagine), with a good amount of pumpkin flavor but maybe a little too much spice (particularly cinnamon). The cream cheese adds a nice, slightly tangy, sweet creaminess, but I think I'd prefer just pumpkin pie filling rather than a combination with cream cheese. The cream cheese works better as a counterbalance to stronger fillings like
strawberry, but pumpkin is one of those mellow flavors that is easily overshadowed.
Overall, I thought Popeyes' Spiced Pumpkin and Cream Cheese Pie was really good and especially recommend it for those who miss McDonald's old deep-fried pies.
