El Pollo Loco's Pork Carnitas Sopes feature pork carnitas, refried beans, cabbage, poblano salsa, poblano cream, pico de gallo and cotija cheese on corn sopes.
It's
$5.49 for an order of two but I had a coupon that got me an order plus chips and drink for $5.
A sope is pretty much a savory corn pancake. They're slightly hollowed out on top to hold the other ingredients.
El Pollo Loco's sopes had just a slightly crispy crust while the inside was coarse with a bit of chew. Due to the thickness, there's a substantial corn flavor to it; more so than you'd get with a crunchy taco shell or corn tortilla.
The pico de gallo imparted some nice flavors but lacked in freshness; it was close to packaged quality rather than something made each day.
The beans provide a lot of the dish's flavor, giving an earthy base to everything. The cotija cheese adds a bit of savory bite, while the cabbage provided crunch.
The pork was tender, well-seasoned, and salty.
The poblano cream didn't really figure in, but the poblano salsa added some tang and just a bit of heat.
Overall, El Pollo Loco's Pork Carnitas Sope were pretty good. There was a good amount of different flavors and textures, although it's not terribly different than El Pollo Loco's burritos or tacos, save for the heavier corn flavor and thickness of the sopes and the focus on beans over the pork.
