Dreyer's Chocolate Malt Frozen Custard is a new, thicker, richer version of their regular ice cream in a chocolate malt flavor.
It was
$3.89 for a quart.
Compared to regular Dreyer's, the frozen custard is much more dense and a little richer but not quite as rich as super-premium ice creams like Haagen-Dazs or Ben & Jerry's.
In terms of taste, it lives up to the name and tastes very much like a chocolate malt milk shake. Whereas chocolate ice cream tends to have a slightly bitter note, Chocolate Malt is milk chocolate through and through with an end note of malt to it. It's a mellow and pleasant flavor.
Overall, Dreyer's Chocolate Malt Frozen Custard strikes a nice balance between standard and super-premium ice cream, offering a flavor closer to the first with the texture of the second. The flavor is especially nice if you like chocolate milk shakes.
