Hostess Red Velvet Cupcakes are here for Valentine's Day and feature red velvet cupcakes with a creamy filling, frosted with cream cheese-flavored icing.
A 12.7-oz box of 8 individually-wrapped cupcakes cost me
$2.99.
The frosting was a bit dry and cracked, which was unusual as all the previous Hostess Cupcakes I've seen and/or eaten sported an almost perfectly smooth surface. Sure enough, it had a bit of a hardened, crusty texture to it. It didn't taste like cream cheese at all and was more just a sweet white icing.
The cake exhibited a nice shade of red but, like most red velvet cakes, just tastes like plain white cake with a hint of chocolate/cocoa to it. For a packaged cake, it was moist enough without being oily and sported a dense texture.
The creamy filling is the same stuff you find in all Hostess Cupcakes. It's creamy, sweet, and a little oily.
Overall, Hostess Red Velvet Cupcakes were nice enough and pretty much tastes like the brand's Chocolate Cupcakes except with a white icing on top. They might be nicer still if you have a tub of cream cheese frosting to spread on top of them.
