Chipotle Now Serves Only Non-GMO Food

Chipotle has managed to source only non-GMO (genetically modified organisms) ingredients to make all of the food in their U.S. restaurants and is looking to get rid of any artificial additives/ingredients in their food as well.

It's pretty impressive considering that, according to the USDA National Agricultural Statistics Service, 94% of corn and 93% of soybeans grown in the U.S. are GMOs, and Chipotle offers both tofu, corn tortillas, and corn salsa. They also previously fried their chips and taco shells in soybean oil.

The company reports that switching to non-GMO ingredients did not result in significantly higher ingredients costs and that they did not raise prices due to the non-GMO ingredients.

As far as artificial ingredients go, Chipotle is working with their suppliers and aiming to get rid of the few remaining artificial ingredients from their tortillas. Tortillas are the only food item on the Chipotle menu that still includes any artificial ingredients, namely preservatives and dough conditioners. The project is a work-in-progress and they don't currently have a time frame for when they'll find a solution.
