Review: McDonald's - Steakhouse Sirloin Third Pound Burger

McDonald's Steakhouse Sirloin Third Pound Burger features a third-pound sirloin beef patty, new creamy peppercorn sauce, grilled onions, sauteed mushrooms, and two slices of processed white cheddar.

I picked one up for $4.99.

The new sirloin patty is pretty big and meaty. The flavor seems more beefy and less seasoned than I remember the Angus being, which is different but still nice. My particular patty sported a nice browning on both sides and was moist with a fairly coarse grind. You might get a fine crust if you manage to get one fresh off the grill.

The patty is accentuated by the tasty new creamy peppercorn sauce, which offers a meaty savory base with a slight tang and a noticeable black pepper flavor.

Perhaps it was the more simple composition or maybe it was buoyed by the other ingredients, but I could actually taste the white cheddar rather than the vague creamy impression I'm normally left with. It could just be that there's two slices though.

The grilled onions and mushrooms both fit in rather well against the sauce and the beef and, in general, balanced each other in a pleasant fashion. The onions had that bittersweet caramelized quality to them.

The bun is pretty much a bigger version of McDonald's regular bun. It's squishy soft and rather than their more recent forays into "bakery" or "artisan" buns, it's most definitely a burger bun.

Overall, I really enjoyed McDonald's Steakhouse Sirloin Third Pounder Burger. I especially liked the meatiness and peppercorn sauce.
