Popeyes' Smoky Garlic Chile Chicken features chicken tenderloins marinated in a blend of smoked garlic and Morita chili peppers and then battered, breaded, and deep-fried.
I picked up a $4.99 combo that includes four pieces of the new chicken, a side, biscuit, and new Garlic Herb sauce.
The chicken tenderloins were fatter and shorter in length than Popeye's normal chicken tenders. They were indeed tender and quite juicy.
More importantly, they were delicious. The marinade gave the chicken an extra savory depth with hints of smokiness, garlic, and just a bit of a kick.
The Garlic Herb sauce offered a lemony garlic styling to your typical mayo. It went really well with the chicken, but because the chicken was already really flavorful, I had a hard time choosing to dip or not so I just alternated.
The batter was the same light, crispy, flaky batter you find on most Popeyes' chicken.
Overall, Popeyes' Smoky Garlic Chile Chicken is a winner in my book. If they offered the same marinade/seasoning on Popeyes' regular chicken and strips, I'd find myself there much more often. It's a shame it's only around for a month.
