It’s Hoagiefest at Wawa again, with the chain offering $4.99 classic size (10”) hoagies through August 16th. Even though you can already customize your sandwiches, this year they’ve added 9 recipes submitted by Wawa associates in different regions of the company’s coverage area for our easy ordering pleasure. I already marked my calendar for Hoagiefest so when I saw one of the regional sandwiches was selected from a local city (Hampton, VA), I decided to forego my usual Italian in favor of the Spicy Chicken Fajita hoagie.
My Spicy Chicken Fajita hoagie was loaded with toppings, particularly peppers. The sweet peppers did a good job of balancing out the hot jalapenos. Both peppers were nice and firm so there was some pop when I bit into them. The onions tasted fresh but weren’t quite as strong as the peppers in the overall taste of the sub.
The pepper jack cheese and creamy chipotle sauce were melted onto the chicken. Both contributed some low levels of heat which helped the hoagie live up to it’s “spicy” name without overdoing it. Wawa’s chicken is shredded, not quite to the level of Taco Bell’s, but there are few chunks to be found. It’s not too flavorful by itself but with the cheese and sauce here it felt like I was eating a quesadilla on bread. Speaking of the bread, it did a pretty good job holding up the the sauce. It was actually a little moist on the outside (probably due to wrapping) but it never got mushy.
