Review: Papa John's - Grilled Chicken Margherita Pizza

Papa John's Grilled Chicken Margherita Pizza is a thin crust with a combination of pizza sauce, basil pesto, and mozzarella, topped with grilled white meat chicken and diced Roma tomatoes.

I bought a large for $12.

As you can guess from the components, this is basically a pretty standard chicken pizza with the addition of pesto to the pizza sauce.

The chicken was seasoned with a nice flavor and added a nice, meaty quality to the pizza. It stood out a bit more due to the thin crust.

Papa John's thin crust (and that of Pizza Hut and Domino's, for that matter) isn't really like any traditional pizza (and definitely not like a margherita pizza, despite how they decided to name this one). Which is not to say that it's bad; just different. It reminds me more of pie crust or cracker bread more than anything. There's a layered, crisp quality but also a slightly soft chew intermixed here and there.

The tomatoes add an additional, slightly fresher tang to the pizza sauce, while the pesto chimes in with a mild basil note. It's a very slight change but a pleasant one.

Overall, Papa John's Grilled Chicken Margherita Pizza was pretty enjoyable but offered very little in the way of newness. I kind of wished they pushed it a little further with just pesto sauce rather than a mixture of pesto and pizza sauce, just for a more marked departure from the rest of their menu.
