The suggested price is $4.49 per 8-oz box but I received these courtesy of Tastykake. It's been pretty hot with the summer and all so the coating melted a bit.
The white confectionery coating was fairly sweet and reasonably creamy but there was a lot of it compared to the small size of the actual cake. It's especially thick on top (perhaps to make sure the filling stays intact). All that coating makes the experience more like eating frosting than cake, which isn't my preference (to be fair, they're called "Kandy Kakes" for a reason).
Both cakes were a little dry but that might vary depending on how long you leave them sitting in the cupboard (as well as how long they've been sitting on store shelves). The graham cake is the drier of the two. It actually tasted a lot like a graham cracker but some of the effect is lost due to the abundance of frosting. It's a shame as I've never come across a graham cake before.
The sponge cake offered the same lightly vanilla-flavored, soft dense texture that's indicative of a lot of snack cakes.
Overall, Tastykake's 2015 Summer Kandy Kakes are fairly good as long as you like Kandy Kakes (or a lot of frosting in general). I just want to scrape most of the frosting off myself.
