Frozen Friday: Tai Pei - Beef & Broccoli

Tai Pei's Beef & Broccoli features beef, onions, and broccoli in an "Asian-style" sauce over steamed rice.

A 14-oz box was $1.88 on sale.

This was interesting as you microwave it right in the box, sealed plastic and all.

The beef turned out pretty nice. It was cut thin, but not too thin, and was tender and flavorful. The broccoli was overly mushy as microwaved broccoli tends to be. Some people like it that way but I prefer my broccoli more crisp. The onions were similarly soft but with just a slight watery crispness.

The thickened sauce that held it all together carried the typical notes of sweet soy sauce but also an atypically bold touch of ginger. It was tasty and not too salty but definitely different from most beef and broccoli dishes I've eaten.

The rice was of the parboiled variety, which tends to be firm and unsticky compared to the steamed long-grain rice you might be at a Chinese restaurant. It's all on the bottom of the take-out-style box so be sure to mix it up. I guess I haven't eaten out of a Chinese take-out box in a while as I didn't mix it up and ended up with just plain rice on the bottom.

Overall, Tai Pei's Beef & Broccoli was pretty enjoyable. There was a decent amount of beef and the sauce had a nice flavor. The rice and broccoli might be hit or miss for some though.
