Popeyes' Tabasco Spiced Pepper Barrel Tenders feature chicken breast strips marinated in a special blend of white oak-aged Tabasco spice and then hand-battered and breaded in the chain's usual fashion.
I got three strips, a side, and a biscuit for
$4.99.
These tasted very similar to Popeyes' regular spicy chicken strips to me but maybe with the a little heavier on the seasoning and a little less on the spicy heat. The flavor was enjoyable and tasty enough to go without sauce, but didn't offer much in the way of novelty. Unlike
their previous Tabasco effort, this one didn't really bring to mind the famous sauce.
Beyond the flavor, the chicken was moist and tender with a light even coat of flaky crispiness. There's a redness hue to them but as I mentioned the heat would probably count as medium to mild for most.
Overall, Popeyes' Tabasco Spiced Barrel Tenders were flavorful and well-executed but doesn't differentiate themselves enough from the chain's regular spicy tenders.
